Parts of Lewis woke up to its first snow and ice of the winter this morning, catching the Roads Department by surprise. It was Stornoway and surrounding areas that took the brunt of it. A two vehicle accident closed the A859 Stornoway to Tarbert road, near Luirbost, for a period. There are reports of a further two accidents, involving two vehicles and one vehicle, respectively. Fortunately, there does not appear to have been any casualties.
Air traffic was also hit and, although early morning flights were not greatly affected, a subsequent drop in temperature resulted in Stornoway Airport having to close for a period. Following its re-opening several flights were disrupted and at least one flight, from Stornoway to Edinburgh, was cancelled.
The Ness area, true to form, did not experience any snow or ice - just continuous, torrential rain that would have had Noah scampering for his toolbox.
